The Croatian National Bank has the exclusive right to issue kuna banknotes and kuna and lipa coins and it is responsible for the printing of banknotes and minting of coins.

Banknote printing

Given the annual requirements for banknotes in regular supply and the need to maintain an adequate quality of banknotes in circulation, there is no economic justification to set up an in-house printing works so that kuna banknotes are printed in foreign licensed printing works selected through international tenders.

The printing of 1,000, 500, 20 and 10 kuna banknotes has been agreed with Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), Munich, while the printing of 200, 100 and 50 kuna banknotes has been agreed with Österreichische Banknoten und Sicherheitsdruck (OeBS), Vienna.

Coin minting

In order to meet the requirement for the minting of coins, ranging annually between 80 and 100 million coins, the Croatian National Bank has set up a mint: the Croatian Monetary Institute Ltd., Sveta Nedjelja, of which it is a co-owner with the Government of the Republic of Croatia.
