CNB's role

The CNB has a number of important roles in the area of payment operations: it keeps credit institutions' accounts and the accounts of the Republic of Croatia, operates payment systems and exercises oversight over them, issues banknotes and coins and supplies cash centres with cash.

The stability and effectiveness of economic and financial systems and the safety of all participants in the execution of payment services depend on safe and reliable payment operations. The CNB has an important role in ensuring a transparent, safe and effective functioning of the payment operations and payment systems.

The CNB's role within the payment operations is also to exercise oversight, regulate and improve the payment system and contribute to its stability.

The CNB is the operator of TARGET2-HR.

The regulation and supervision of the payment system in the Republic of Croatia are within the competence of the CNB.

The supervision of safety and effectiveness of payment operations and payment systems, including the safety of participants in payment operations is an important role of the CNB within payment operations. The CNB, within its competences, determines the submitters of, the content, manner and deadlines for reports on payment services and publishes the collected statistical data on its website and regularly submits the requested data to the European Central Bank under its reporting obligations.

The role of the central bank is very important in the area of supervision of payment service providers and payment systems, as well as in monitoring the development of trends in the financial market, new payment services and payment instruments, as well as in promoting their development, effectiveness and soundness to ensure the improvement of competitiveness and confidence in the financial system and its safe and effective functioning.
