The European Central Bank is not withdrawing first-series banknotes, including the first-series 50-euro banknotes.

Following the reports in some media and on social networks that some euro area central banks have decided to withdraw the first series of 50-euro banknotes, or all first series banknotes, from circulation, the Croatian National Bank warns that this is not true.

We would like to point out that the European Central Bank, or any other euro area central bank, has not decided to withdraw any euro banknotes or coins from circulation. All euro banknotes, including the first series of 50-euro banknotes, still retain their full value, remain in circulation and there is no need to exchange them for the second series euro banknotes.

It is also important to emphasise that euro banknotes, even if damaged, do not lose their value. A damaged euro banknote can be exchanged for its full nominal value if more than half of the banknote is presented to one of the euro area national central banks or if it can be proven that the missing part of the banknote was destroyed.
