At their meeting in Brussels on 19 January, the finance ministers of the euro area countries (Eurogroup) nominated the Governor of the Croatian National Bank, Boris Vujčić, as the new Vice-President of the European Central Bank (ECB). The Governor of the CNB is expected to take office on 1 June 2026, following the endorsement of the Eurogroup decision by the European Council, when the term of office of the current Vice-President, Luis de Guindos, expires.
"I would like to thank the finance ministers of the euro area countries for the nomination and for the trust they have shown. I would also like to thank the Government of the Republic of Croatia, and the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Croatia to the EU, for supporting me, especially Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Minister of Finance Marko Primorac, for their active support for my taking up this office," said the CNB Governor
Boris Vujčić will be the first person from Central and Eastern Europe to serve on the ECB's Executive Board since its establishment more than 25 years ago, which makes this nomination even more important.
"This nomination is also a recognition for the long-standing work of the Croatian National Bank, for the successful introduction of the euro in Croatia and for the contribution of our country to the functioning of the euro area. I am aware of the responsibility of the Vice-President of the European Central Bank and, if confirmed by the European Council, I will continue to push for price stability, the resilience of the financial system and citizens’ trust in the euro across the euro area. I will continue to carry out my duties as the Governor of the CNB responsibly until I take up my new duties. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all CNB employees for their hard work and efforts so far, because this is also their success," said Boris Vujčić.
Pursuant to Article 283(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the appointment procedure continues as follows:
February–March 2026: The European Parliament (Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs – ECON) holds a hearing with the CNB Governor The Governing Council of the ECB delivers its opinion on the nomination of Governor Vujčić.
March 2026: The European Parliament issues its opinion on the nomination of the CNB Governor at the plenary session.
March 2026: The European Council (heads of state or government) takes a final decision on the appointment of Boris Vujčić.
1 June 2026: Taking office as the Vice-President of the ECB.
The Croatian National Bank will continue to inform the public in a timely manner of all procedural decisions regarding this procedure.
