The Croatian National Bank issued a commemorative gold coin and a commemorative silver coin to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alojzije Stepinac, a cardinal and the archbishop of Zagreb, whose dedication to witnessing the faith and defending the persecuted as well as courage shown while tried and imprisoned by the communist regime earned him a prominent place in the Croatian history.
Minted in proof quality, the coins were released for sale on 8 May 1998.

The Decision on the issue and sale of commemorative gold and silver coins "100th anniversary of the birth of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac" was published in the Official Gazette 48/1998, 34/2010, 120/2010, 128/2012, 121/2016 109/2017.
The gold coin was designed by the sculptor Kuzma Kovačić and the silver coin by the sculptor Kažimir Hraste.
This issue was minted by the Croatian Mint.
