To mark the visit of the Holy Father John Paul II to the Republic of Croatia on 10 and 11 September 1994, the Croatian National Bank issued a commemorative 1,000 kuna gold coin and a commemorative 100 kuna silver coin.
Minted in proof quality, the coins were released for sale on 9 September 1994.

The Decision on the issue and sale of commemorative gold and silver coins "John Paul II" was published in the Official Gazette, No. 64/1994, 34/2010, 120/2010, 128/2012, 121/2016 and 109/2017.
The design of the gold and silver coins is by the sculptor Kuzma Kovačić.
This issue was minted by the Croatian Mint, in cooperation with Münze Österreich AG, Vienna.
