In cooperation with Slavonska banka d.d., Osijek, the Croatian National Bank issued commemorative gold and silver coins featuring rare birds from the wetland habitats of Kopačevski rit Natural Park in Baranja, in an attempt to emphasise the need for preserving rare animal and plant species and the environment.
Minted in proof quality, the coins were released for sale on 14 November 1997.

The Decision on the issue and sale of commemorative gold and silver coins "Baranja" was published in the Official Gazette No. 121/1997, 34/2010, 120/2010, 128/2012, 121/2016 and 109/2017.
The design of the gold and silver coins is by the sculptor Damir Mataušić.
This issue was minted by the Croatian Mint.
